Curb Appeal #1 - From Ranch to Cottage Charmer

BEFORE

AFTER

In the following weeks I'll be offering a series on how to add curb appeal to your existing or future home.

If you are selling, you CAN NOT overestimate how much curb appeal helps when listing your home.

If you are buying, having the vision to see what a few inexpensive changes can do to a house can help you turn a "Plain Jane" (and probably less expensive) home into your dream home.

But What Is There to DO In the Country?

I get this question a lot since I moved back to the country, and it turns out there are so many I can't do them justice in one blog post. Therefore, I've started a Pinterest page with categories like:
  • Wineries
  • Places to Stay
  • Nature
  • Worship
  • Amish and Mennonite Communities
  • Community Supported Agriculture
  • Antiques
  • Local Barns
  • History
Then there are boards on Staging, Curb Appeal, and of course my listings.

I'll add more and more as the weeks go on, so check back often.

Hillsboro Then and Now

When I was growing up in Winchester, Hillsboro was the "big town" we came to for shopping, the movies and a nice meal.  It was the Mt. Pilot to our Mayberry.  (If you don't get the reference ask your parents.)  It looked like this:

Like many young people, I moved to "the city" -- in my case Cincinnati -- as soon as possible.  After spending most of my adult there, it was no longer the place I wanted to call home.  Feeling somewhat like Goldilocks, Cincinnati was too big and though in my heart it would always be home, Winchester was too small.  When I began to search for my forever home, the Hillsboro of my youth came to mind.  I took a drive and found it now looked like this:

Not much difference is there?  And that's the point.  In all the ways that mattered, it was still the same.  The pizza parlor where I had gone on dates is still here.  Not only that but it's still in the same family.  There's no mall -- but there ARE plenty of Mom and Pop shops.  There's no gourmet restaurant, but if you like down home cooking, or the best burger ANYWHERE (that would be Cowaburger) then you're in luck.  They use locally raised beef, and the buns are made at a local bakery.

Highland County is home now.  Like Goldilocks I finally found the one that is just right.

If your just right is the same as mine, give me a call and we'll find a place YOU can call home.

Decorating Trends for 2014

What Are the Hot Home Décor Trends for 2014?
Just like fashion designs and hair styles, home décor trends are constantly changing and evolving. Each new season brings a new must-have feature for your home. In order to keep your  home looking fresh and chic, what are the hot trends for 2014 that you can incorporate into your décor?

Bright Paint Colors
Vibrant (and even neon) hues are very popular in fashion at the moment and they also look really chic on your walls. If you are looking for a way to freshen up a dull room, a bright pop of color can really do the trick. It doesn’t have to be overwhelming if you keep the rest of the room neutral and use the bright color as an accent.

Original Artwork
Decorating your home with unique and original works of art from funky local artists is a hot trend this year. You could find such pieces at a local art fair or on online craft auction websites. You could also check out a local art school or university art program in your area where you can buy some student artwork at cheap prices.

1920s Inspired Designs
With the Roaring 20s being revitalized on the silver screen in the show Boardwalk Empire and the film The Great Gatsby, designs from the 1920s are becoming more popular. Why not incorporate some gorgeous Art Deco furniture or decoration into your home? Check out auctions to find authentic vintage pieces for cheap prices.

Simple Wood
Another hot trend for 2014 is unfinished exposed wood furniture, with a very natural texture and feel. These simple wood pieces give your home a natural beauty that compliments any color. It works well with neutral accents to give the home a very peaceful and welcoming atmosphere.

Stripes and Graphic Prints
Crisp patterns, graphic prints and stripes are popular at the moment in everything from fabrics to wallpaper to furniture. If you really want to make your home décor look cutting edge, incorporate some of these eye-popping graphic designs into your décor.

These are just a few of the hottest home décor trends of the year 2014. Which ones will you incorporate into the décor of your  home?
